We are just about getting back into lawn mowing season, albeit slowly. Here are a few tips to help you give your grass the best start you can.
Don’t cut too much off in one go. Take your time to reduce the length. The first cut should be done with the blades set high. Think of it as a trim to even out any tufty bits rather than a proper cut.
There is often a lot of moss in the grass following the Winter and this year seems to be particularly bad. If you are feeling energetic and fancy a workout grab a spring-tine rake and get raking! Clearing the moss and dead grass in this way is known as scarifying. You can also buy electric scarifiers. At Homebase and B and Q they start from around the £70 mark.
Give your lawn a Spring feed. Don’t do it when it is frosty or when a frost is likely. However, make sure you follow the instructions carefully to avoid large black scorch marks where there used to be grass!
To help against moss over the Summer establish the lawn height at about 1″/2.5cm. Also cut it little and often; a weekly trim is better than a fortnightly chop
Finally, trim the edges and remove the clippings. Even if you’ve not managed to cut the grass having neat edges, especially along paths, instantly lifts the garden.
