May Plant Of The Month – Rhododendron

Rhododendrons cover a huge range of plants including Azaleas. Some are evergreen, some deciduous and they range from small mounded shrubs to huge tree-like ones.

This is the best time of year to see them.  They come in a myriad of colours and many are scented.  The photos are from Leonardslee Gardens which is definitely worth a visit.

Rhodendendrons need acid soil so if you grow the smaller ones in pots you need to make sure you are using ericaceous compost. Ideally planted in dappled shade they don’t like to be planted too deeply or where they will sit in cold winter wet.  They prefer a spot which is protected from cold Northerly or Easterly winds.
