March Plant Of The Month – Camellia

A welcome burst of colour at this time of the year these are evergreen shrubs with flowers in either red, white or pink.

Depending on the variety chosen they come in various sizes and can get quite big.  Or, they can be grown in pots.  If you are growing it in a container they like acidic soil so need to be planted in ericaceous soil.

As well as acidic soil they prefer to planted in partial shade.  A sheltered position, that is not east facing, is best as the flowers can be ‘burnt’ by frost.

If you want to prune them, to maintain size and encourage bushy growth, this needs to be done straight after flowering as the buds for the following year are produced over the summer.

A great low-maintenance shrub for some early spring colour.
