Known as the Cornelian Cherry or Edible Dogwood this is a large shrub or small to medium tree. In late Winter/early Spring it has lovely bright yellow flowers on bare stems. It has bright red fruits in mid-summer which are edible. If they are fully ripe they taste sweet/sour a bit like sour cherries. High in vitamin C They are often used to make jams and are good in sauces with game dishes.
They can tolerate an exposed site and like either full or partial sun. They can be grown on either acid or alkaline soils. In about 15 – 20 years they can reach a height of 2.5 – 4m
As well as the flowers and fruit they have Autumn interest as the leaves turn purple before they drop.
