Also known as the Silk tassel bush this is a large, evergreen shrub. The male plant (female plants are rarely seen) is covered in long silvery catkins in January and February. The variety ‘James Roof’ tends to be the one chosen as it has longer tassels than the species.
They are great for growing at the back of borders as they will reach at least 2.5m in height; taller in milder areas. It is a vigorous plant so not ideal for smaller gardens.
Garrya elliptica are hardy to about -5˚C to -10˚C so will happily grow in most parts of the UK. They like full or partial sun and will grow in most soil types.
