May Plant Of The Month – Peonies

Beautiful peony blooms

Herbaceous peonies are bushy plants which grow to about 80cm in height.  They like a sheltered spot with sun most of the day and dislike being planted too deeply.

In the winter they will die off to come back in the Spring.  The flowers are large and heavy so the plant is best if it has supports to grow through.  The leaves often turn a lovely mix of gold and red in the Autumn.

The large, blousy flowers come in white, cream, yellow, various shades of pink and red and are often perfumed.

Lots of advice to perfect your peonies can be found on the Gardeners’ World website
