March Plant of the Month – Pulmonaria

This is a semi-evergreen herbaceous perennial.  It has green leaves which have white spots.  The flowers start pink then turn blue once pollinated so the plants are a fabulous mix of pink and blue.

They prefer to be grown in either full or partial shade and not in south-facing position.  Ideally the soil should be moist, but well-drained.  In the right spot they make a good ground cover plant.  In very hot summers they can wilt and get powdery mildew.  Remove the affected leaves.  They soon recover once it rains.  They are great for growing under deciduous plants, as long as it is not too dry, which will provide shade through the hottest months.

To propagate they are easily divided in the Autumn.
