The common name of Verbascum is Mullein. There are lots of different species and are mainly biennials or perennials. They have a low rosette of leaves at the base with a tall flowering stem. They flower over a long period of time through the summer even in dry soils. Bees and other pollinators like them too!
They are best grown on well-drained soil in full sun and are a good plant for poor chalky soils. The height of the plant ranges from 90cm to 2.5m. There are a variety of colours too; yellow, white, orange and purple.
Traditionally seen as a cottage garden plant they also work really well in more modern planting adding height without bulk.
The biennial forms self-seed freely so wait for them to set seed (or collect the seed) before cutting down the finished flower stalk.
